Unforgettable Trekking in the Everest Region

Unforgettable Trekking in the Everest Region

Everest Region Trekking is one of the most popular routes in Nepal. The scenery is absolutely stunning, with majestic snow-capped mountains, picturesque valleys, and serene lakes. The trek offers a good level of challenge, but it’s still accessible to most trekkers.

I recently had the incredible opportunity to complete the Everest Region Trek with my friend Mr. Enric from Spain, and it was an unforgettable experience that we will cherish forever. This was Enric’s 6th trekking adventure in Nepal, and his 3rd in the Everest Region. Our journey began from Lukla, after an exciting half-hour flight from Kathmandu. Lukla is a charming mountain town located at the foot of the mountains and where the famous Tenzing-Hillary Airport is.

Khumbu Trek

Since it was mid-November, there were fewer people on the trail, allowing us to enjoy a more comfortable trek from Lukla to Namche Bazaar, the gateway to the Everest region. During peak season, this part of the trail can get quite crowded with trekkers, porters, guides, donkeys, and yak caravans. Personally, I prefer trekking in the late season in Khumbu. Namche is a vibrant town with a variety of shops, restaurants, bakeries, pubs, bars, and teahouses. It’s the perfect place to acclimatize to the altitude before continuing our trek.

One of the highlights of our journey was the hike to Hilleri Viewpoint, which was absolutely amazing. We took the route via Khunde village, which, along with neighboring Khumjung village, is one of the largest Sherpa villages in the Khumbu Region. Exploring these villages is a rewarding experience, allowing you to submerge yourselves in Sherpa culture, traditions, and daily life. Both villages have beautiful Buddhist monasteries. Khumjung Monastery even kept the legendary Yeti scalp. It’s believed that the Yeti, also known as the abominable snowman, resides in the Himalayas. These villages are located at the foot of the sacred peak of Khumbila.

We noticed that a beautiful little park was under construction just before reaching Khunde village. They were renovating an old gate, Mani walls, and stupas. Once completed, it will be a great attraction for trekkers. Although the weather was clear, it was quite windy. The view from Hilleri’s viewpoint was simply breathtaking, with both Thame Valley and Khumbu Valley displaying their natural beauty. The Everest massif, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Kangtega, Thamserku, Kusum Kanguru, and Kongde Ridge looked absolutely stunning.

We spent the night at Syangboche Viewpoint, where we met our friend Pasang, who runs a beautiful Sherpa Panorama Hotel. In the late afternoon, the clouds played hide-and-seek with the mountains, creating a constantly changing and awe-inspiring landscape. The evening light reflecting on the walls of Mt. Nuptse, Everest, and Lhotse was truly spectacular.

Everest Region Trek

The following day, we continued our trek to Tengboche Monastery, an impressive and significant monastery in the Khumbu Region. Built on the top of the hill, and offers breathtaking views of the valley. Despite the cloudy sky upon our arrival, the scenery surrounding the monastery was still amazing. We wandered around, capturing many photographs, and had the opportunity to attend the evening Puja at the monastery, which was a deeply spiritual experience.

We continued our journey to Pangboche, which was just a short walk from Tengboche. We had plenty of time to explore the area and it turned out to be a wonderful experience. We enjoyed walking around the Pongboche village and visiting the Pangboche Monastery. We were fortunate to witness the annual puja at the Monastery and the villagers warmly welcomed us, inviting us to their kitchen and offering us tea and coffee. The view of the mountains was awesome, and the weather that day was fantastic.

It was a great day hike to Ama Dablam Base Camp, although it involved a long, steep climb. However, the effort was totally worth it. The day was again wonderful, with the magnificent Nuptse wall and our beloved Ama Dablam Mountain captivating us throughout the day. Since it was the end of the climbing season, there were only a few camps and not many activities happening. After spending an hour or so, we returned to Pangboche.

We decided to skip Everest Base Camp since Enric had already visited the place the previous year. Instead, we headed towards the beautiful Gokyo Valley via Phortse, Dole, and Machhermo. Gokyo Valley is my favorite destination in the Khumbu Region. The series of lakes, the longest Ngozumba Glacier, and the surrounding mountain views make the valley truly incredible. We spent a few days there, hiking around the lake and enjoying the stunning views.

Gokyo Valley Trek

We did a short hike along the ridge, where the view of Ngozumba Glacier, Mt. Cho Oyu, and the neighboring mountains to the north and the down valley to the south was simply breathtaking. The climb to Gokyo Ri was a bit challenging the next morning, but once we reached to the top, the 360-degree view was absolutely jaw-dropping. We were surrounded by mountains, including the four highest peaks: Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. It was a perfect day with very few people at the summit, no wind, and plenty of sunshine. It felt amazing.

Another great and challenging day awaited us as we crossed the Renjo-La pass, the highest pass of our trek. The climb from Gokyo to the pass was long and demanding, but the view was incredible. Mt. Everest seemed to follow us along the way, as did the striking Gokyo third lake. The descent to Lungde was quite long, and we were quite tired upon reaching there.

The next day, we descended to the picturesque village of Thame. The village and Thame Valley are famous for their ancient Buddhist monasteries, numerous mani walls, and stupas, which attract many trekkers. The valley is also renowned for its breathtaking mountain views, which provide a stunning backdrop to the landscape. It was a beautiful sunny day, and we enjoyed wandering around and visiting the famous Thame Monastery. The evening scenes from the ridge were truly magical.

Thame Village

We continued our descent until we reached our final destination, Lukla, from where we flew back to Kathmandu. Overall, the Everest Region Trekking was an incredible experience. The weather was perfect almost every single day, and there were fewer crowds throughout the trip. It was the best trek in the Khumbu (Everest) region.
