Chitwan National Park lies in the heart of Nepal, is a place where nature’s beauty and lively culture converge. From its picturesque grassy plains to its dense tropical jungles, this national park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and culture seekers alike. During our visit to Chitwan in October 2022, we had the pleasure of exploring the lesser-known Barali region, away from the bustling crowds of Sauraha. Join me on this unforgettable journey as we delve into the Tharu community’s rich traditions and begin on thrilling jungle safaris in this captivating destination.
Arrival at Barali
After a smooth and timely flight from Kathmandu to Bharatpur, a two-hour drive brought us to the enchanting Barali Tharu Community Homestay. The bumpy ride, exacerbated by ongoing maintenance work on the east-west highway, tested our patience. However, the anticipation of what lay ahead kept us eager throughout the journey.
The Homestay Experience
Upon our arrival at the homestay, we were warmly welcomed by the women of the community. They stood there holding aksheta (rice mixed with flower petals), and red-colored powder on a plate, along with flower garlands to greet us. Each member of the homestay community greeted us with a red tika and a flower garland, creating a wonderful atmosphere.
The main building served as a central hub, accommodating reception, dining, and a communal kitchen. Additionally, there were several cottages available, providing comfortable accommodations. Although the rooms were simple, they offered all the necessary amenities. The spaciousness and cozy beds ensured a restful stay, and the hot showers were a refreshing treat after long days of exploration.
Exploring Barali
With our bellies filled with delicious Tharu cuisine during lunch, we spent the afternoon leisurely wandering around the homestay. The tranquil surroundings allowed us to unwind and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. Later in the day, we went on a village tour that lasted an hour or so. As we strolled through typical Tharu villages, we observed the daily activities of the locals and marveled at the breathtaking scenery of the lush rice fields. It was a day filled with simplicity and beauty.
Thrilling Jungle Safari and Cultural Immersion
The following morning, we set out on a jungle safari. The weather was misty and damp in the morning, adding an element of mystery to our adventure. Driving through the village for about an hour and entering the forest, and soon found ourselves surrounded by the captivating wilderness. Within less than 20 minutes, our luck seemed boundless as we spotted two magnificent one-horned Rhinoceros up close. Throughout the day, we were fortunate to witness the grandeur of eight rhinoceros, a huge number of Bird species, Many Deer herds, and Crocodiles. The vast grassy fields and enchanting forests created an atmosphere of tranquility and awe. In the evening, we were treated to an interesting Tharu Cultural dance show. Each sequence of dance enthralled us, showcasing the incredible talent and artistry of the Tharu community.
Bird Watching and Cultural Immersion
The morning of the third day began with an enthralling Bird-watching excursion. We were amazed by the number of Bird species we encountered, submerging ourselves in the natural wonders that Chitwan had to offer. We spotted a great number of Birds and observe local’s daily life activities. After a delightful lunch, we began a bicycle ride through the villages. It was a great ride to discover the unseen Barauli area, with more opportunities to wander the local lifestyle and to see the charm of the surroundings. As the day drew to a close, we made our way to the banks of the Narayani River to witness a spectacular sunset. The Calm waters mirrored the vibrant colors of the sky, creating a sight that will forever be etched in our memories. In the evening, we were treated to an interesting Tharu Cultural dance show. Each sequence of dance enthralled us, showcasing the incredible talent and artistry of the Tharu community.
Great memories of Cooking and Eating in the Local Tharu Home
Last night of our Chitwan journey, we had a unique dinner experience as we cooked our meal in a local home with the assistance of some wonderful local ladies. It was truly a special moment, sitting together with the women of the house and preparing our food with joy and laughter.
We all contributed to the meal’s preparation: we cleaned the vegetables, Krishna ground the spices, cooked Ningro (a type of fern harvested from the nearby forest), and made pickles. Meanwhile, the senior lady of the house expertly cooked the rice and chicken curry. Finally, we gathered around the table and relished the delicious local dinner together. The entire experience of cooking and sharing a meal with the welcoming Tharu family was absolutely amazing, leaving us with unforgettable memories.
Farewell to Chitwan
As our four-day stay in Chitwan came to an end, we said goodbye to Barali and made our way to Bharatpur Airport. From there, we caught a flight back to Kathmandu. The two-hour road journey to Bharatpur was filled with memories of unforgettable moments and observations. We caught glimpses of wildlife and immersed ourselves in the Tharu culture at the Barauli homestay, where we received exceptional service and hospitality. These incredible experiences left a lasting impression on our minds.
