Boudhanath Stupa is the main tourist attraction in Kathmandu and one of the biggest Buddhist stupas in the world. Among the Buddhist community, the Stupa is one of the holiest temples and symbolizes the richness of Buddhist culture and traditions. The Stupa is located on the northeastern outskirts of Kathmandu Valley. Going early in the morning or evening to stroll around the inspiring white dome buzzing with energy; observing devotees circumambulating, lighting butter lamps, bowing, and chanting the mantra Om Mani Padme Hung; looking around for souvenirs; or enjoying the view from a rooftop restaurant with a cup of coffee is always joyful in Boudhanath.
In Boudhanath, you can spend the whole day relaxing while appreciating the magnificent beauty and tranquillity of this most divine place. The Stupa is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The massive white Boudhanath Stupa rises 36 meters (118 feet) from the ground. Thousands of devotees circumambulate (kora) the Stupa every day. During the new moon and full moon, the area gets quite busy. There are dozens of Buddhist monasteries around the Stupa, and just about 50 meters north of Boudhanath Stupa, behind the buildings, a beautiful small Ghyoi Lisang Peace Garden is located.
According to historical notes, there was a holy pond that used to be called Ghyoilisang in the Tamang language. According to the story I heard, the soil from that place was used to build the Boudhanath Stupa, and later, the place turned into a pond. Therefore, that historical little pond is related to the Boudhanath Stupa. The historic Ghyoi Lisang Peace Garden and Pond have recently been restored. The little garden has an iconic statue of Guru Rinpoche, a Holy Pond, and eight different stupas, which refer to eight important events in the life of Buddha Sakyamuni, such as his birth, enlightenment, first teaching, and death, etc.
