Setting out on the Ghorepani Poonhill Trek in November 2023 was an incredible journey into the foothills of the Annapurna region. This short trek became a perfect mix of stunning landscapes, youthful company, and a taste of local culture, leaving me and the group of Australian medical student friends with cherished memories.
We, a bunch of excited young trekkers, geared up for this adventure, and it turned out to be quite an adventure! Settled in the foothills of the Annapurna region, the Ghorepani Poonhill Trek is known for its accessibility and breathtaking panoramic views.
The Annapurna region, with its diverse landscapes, provided spectacular scenery throughout our journey. The crisp November air and clear skies made every step enjoyable. Luckily, we had perfect weather, making the overall experience thoroughly delightful.
One of the major highlights of the trek has to be the local cuisine. We all developed a collective love for dal bhat, a traditional Nepali dish featuring lentil soup, rice, veg, and non-veg curries, along with a range of appetizing side dishes. The warmth of local hospitality was not just in the cozy teahouses where we stayed but also in every bite of the delicious local delicacies. Sharing meals became a time for creating new bonds, laughter, and exchanging stories.
We climbed Poonhill early in the morning and saw a lovely sunrise over the rolling hills, with a breathtaking view of the Himalayas. The first rays of the sun painted the sky orange and pink, and we were treated to an overwhelming panorama of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu mountain ranges. When we reached the top, we felt a great sense of accomplishment and camaraderie. The views of the snow-capped peaks, surrounded by the golden glow of the rising sun, were stunning. We spent a lot of time admiring the natural beauty around us, taking many pictures, and enjoying the serene atmosphere. We were all very happy to be together.
The trek we went on was a unique experience. We all took a break from our studies and enjoyed the breathtaking scenery. Although it was challenging, what made it special was the bond that developed among our group. We shared laughter, encouragement, and friendly banter that made the journey enjoyable. We all cooperated and had a great time exploring together.
From the starting point to the summit of Poonhill and back down to lower altitudes, the landscapes transformed into a diverse geographical wonder. Amazing forests, including Rhododendron, terraced farmlands, and charming Gurung and Magar villages provided variation to the trip. Every twist and turn along the way revealed something new, keeping our trek interesting and dynamic. The villages we passed showcased the simplicity of mountain village life of Nepal, and we were welcomed warmly by the locals.
Trekking in Ghorepani Poonhill was amazing. The stunning views, pleasant weather, delicious local food, and the company of fellow adventurers made it an unforgettable journey. As a group of Australian medical students, this trek challenged us both physically and spiritually and helped us appreciate nature, companionship, and the thrill of exploring. When I think back on my time in the Annapurna region, the memories of watching the sunrise from the top of Poonhill and sharing laughter along the trail will continue to inspire my sense of adventure and desire to travel.
