A country known for its majestic mountains and rich cultural heritage, Nepal offers trekking opportunities for adventure enthusiasts. The Ghorepani Poonhill Trek is a popular route, but the Khopra Danda and Mulde Peak treks offer fantastic alternatives. Also called Khayar Lake Trek. This hidden gem offers outstanding mountain views, cultural experiences, and wilderness walks. Join me as I share my unforgettable trip to these amazing places.
We set up Mulde Peak and Khopra Danda‘s journey on 22 October 2022 for 9 days from Ghandruk. We were greeted with beautiful surroundings and warm hospitality and this village mainly inhabited by Gurungs gave us a unique insight into their culture and traditions. As we venture further ahead, the trail took us through dense Rhododendron forest. Although it was not flower season, we are surrounded by natural beauty filling us with peace and quietness.
The trek continued to Mulde Peak with grand panoramic views of the Manaslu, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri Himalayan ranges. In the evening and early morning, we climbed to Mulde Peak Viewpoint. As we reached on top of the viewpoint, breathtaking views of the snow-capped mountains unfolded before our eyes.
The sunrise and sunset views from Mulde Peak were truly mesmerizing, the golden hues lighting up the mountains and creating unforgettable memories in our minds. The highlight of our trek was the discovery of Khopra Danda and the Khayar Lake trek. These hidden gems offer outstanding views of towering giants like Mt. Dhauligiri dominating the western skyline, Tukuche Peak, Nilgiri, Bhara Shikhar, Annapurna South, and the iconic Machhapuchhre. Standing at this vantage point, we were lost in the majestic beauty of nature that surrounded us, allowing us to connect with nature on a deeper level.
Throughout the trip, we had the chance to interact with warm and welcoming locals, especially Gurung Magar communities. Learning about their traditional way of life, customs, and rituals made us appreciate their rich cultural heritage. The food and conversation with them were complimentary experiences that added to the whole trip. Continuing our journey, we passed Swato, a peaceful village known for its beauty. The trail then took us to Ghorepani, a popular stopping point for trekkers on the Poon Hill Trek. Our alternative option allowed us to enjoy the beauty of the region in a peaceful and quiet environment while avoiding the crowds. Our trek ended at Tirkhedhunga, where we left the breathtaking Annapurna range. The beautiful trail to Tirkhedhunga made our journey a fitting end, allowing us to reflect on the wonderful journey we had taken.
This time we were incredibly happy because Mother Nature gave us a wonderful show during our hike. The sky was beautifully blue during the day and at night we had a sparkling view of the stars. The weather was perfect, neither too hot nor too cold, so we never had to stay overnight in the cold. Only two days, in the late afternoon, clouds covered the valley, and sunlight and clouds created amazing scenery and made our trip even more magical.
Looking back on our experience, we realized that Khayar Lake Trekking was more than just seeing sights and wonders. So were the people we met along the way. The genuine warmth and hospitality of the locals made our trip even more memorable. We were greeted with smiles and delicious local food, adding a pleasant flavor to our trip.
